Scholarship to US for Reproductive Health Institute

The 2009 summer program offering of the Gates Institute is a two-week course entitled, “Reproductive Health and Development: Analytic Skills for Policies and Programs.” This course is aimed at mid-career professionals working in population, reproductive health and development programs in developing countries. A certificate of participation is awarded at the end of the course.

The course will be conducted from June 1-12, 2009, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Medical Campus, East Baltimore. A free shuttle service is available to transport participants between the lodging site and the course location.

The deadline for applicants seeking funding and require visa to enter
the USA is drawing near. We are looking forward to working with
talented individuals working in the field of population and reproductive
health. Please submit all required documents electronically by Friday,
20th February, 11.59pm, EST (Eastern Standard Time) to

Art Contest - Win Free Student Registration for The Network: TUFH 2008 Conference

Global Health through Education, Training and Service (GHETS) is sponsoring a contest to design the front of our 2008 holiday greeting card. Any individual health professions student from any institution worldwide may submit either their own original artwork, or artwork created by children or youth from their communities. The individual student whose entry is selected by the judging panel will be awarded free student registration for The Network: TUFH conference in Colombia in September 2008. The winning design and information about the artist will appear on GHETS’ 2008 New Year’s greeting card, which will be sent to nearly 300 partners and donors worldwide. Packages of greeting cards will also be sold to raise money for GHETS and our international partners, so your artwork could be seen by hundreds of people!

All entries must be received by Friday August 1, 2008.

Drawings, paintings or other similar artwork in any medium (pen, pencil, paints, etc.) are acceptable. Entries should reflect general themes related to global community health, but should not include the name GHETS or holiday greetings (which will appear inside the card). The final size of the greeting card will be no larger than 13 cm x 20 cm, so your design should fit into this space, either horizontally or vertically. All entries should be original work, either of the student making the submission, or of another young person who has agreed to let you submit the artwork on his or her behalf. Students may submit more than one design, but all entries become the property of GHETS and will not be returned.

Please include the following information with each entry, on a separate sheet of paper:

Artist information: Full name, sex, age, and place of residence (city/town, country)
Your information: Full name, name and location (city and country) of your school, email address, postal address and telephone number

This is a great story we would like to share with you:

When Barbara Cameron, a medical student from Australia was in Uganda for the Network: TUFH conference last year she visited the Kampala women's prison with a young English lawyer who was working to get health clinics and libraries into East African prisons. The prison itself was pretty horrid. Lots of malaria HIV TB etc. Babies stayed with their mothers until the mother was executed. They had little food and needed milk.

After Barbara got back she told the Legal Aid lawyers in Newcastle and they raised money to buy a cow to provide milk for the prisoners and their children. Got a Fresian because of higher milk production than the local cows.

The attached photo is Pasha Bulcow being handed over at Kampala Women's Prison. The cows name comes from Pasha Bulka, the name of the ship which was washed up on Newcastle Beach, Australia during the huge storms last June.

GHETS Fellowships for Students attending the 2008 Network: TUFH Conference in Colombia

GHETS is pleased to announce the availability of fellowships to support the attendance of students at The Network: TUFH’s annual conference in Bogotá, Colombia in September/October 2008. We will award a total of two fellowships of $500, in one of the GHETS’ program areas: women and health, health workforce development, and worker and community health.

To be eligible for a Student Fellowship, you will be required to have at least one abstract related to the above categories accepted for presentation at The Network: TUFH conference. Recipients of the $500 student awards will be required to raise the rest of the funding needed to attend the conference from other sources.

The deadline for abstract submissions to the conference is June 1, 2008. Once the abstract selection process is complete, (in or around July, 2008) application forms will be sent to all eligible students via email. Criteria under consideration will include: quality of the abstract; access to sufficient additional funding to attend the conference; and quality of the application.

Suggestion for SNO Pre-conference workshop in Colombia

We have started with the preparations for the Colombia conference that will take place from September 27 to October 2, 2008. The conference topic is Adapting Health Services and Health Professions Education to Local Needs: Partnerships, Priorities and Passions.

As you may know we offer some pre-conference workshops on the day prior to the start of the conference (Saturday September 27).

We would like to know whether the SNO has suggestions or requests for a pre-conference workshop. Perhaps you also have suggestions for persons (with experience in the area) who might be interested in facilitating a pre-conference workshop on your selected topic in Colombia.

SNO Challenge

Dear SNO,

In general I agree with the assessment of Emmaline and Robert. In fact, I remember having the same sense after the conference in HCMC, Vietnam in 2005.

The challenge for us is really to further strengthen the SNO, moving beyond the discussions on structure and organization. Form follows function. I think it is time for the SNO to focus our energies into relevant initiatives and engagements.

I am writing this in the hope of eliciting ideas. I will post a similar note in our blog. I hope we can get a discussion going.

I would like to echo here an urgent request from Yoka. I hope we can all contribute ideas. Just write in a comment on this post and I will be the one to summarize it and forward it to the Secretariate.

As you may know the preperations for the Network: TUFH 2007 conference in Uganda have started.
On Saturday September 15 we will organise 3 pre-conference workshops. One of them will especially be for students and young health professionals. Therefore the following questions:

Makerere University Medical Students’ Association (MUMSA) organizes conferences every academic year in Kampala, Uganda. Yet again, we are organizing a conference of international dimensions on child health in Africa, this academic year 2006/2007, slated for 17th to 20th December 2006. It calls for the participation of delegates from all over the world however; we have a special emphasis on sub Saharan Africa. It will be an educational tool for all students who will in the future be involved in the care of patients at various levels of health care delivery, and a gateway to disseminate new information about child health to all participants in healthcare for children and adolescents. All key players in the field of adolescent and child health will be involved.

Student poster session

Hello everybody. I am glad to finally be able to participate…. I recently wrote to Raoul, Ramullah and Liliana about the “student poster session”, for which I had an idea. Here is what I told them:

“…remember the “student poster session” we made in Atlanta? Well I don’t know if you have already organized this year’s “student poster session” but I thought it would be wonderful to organize also a prize for one of the student’s posters.

But how to do it, if we don’t even have founds? Well, in the first place the judges could be ourselves by voting (same as the in the Network), and for the prize: well I was thinking that we can ask every student from each country to bring a small “souvenir” or a little object that represents his or her country or culture with a “tag attached to it explaining what it is”. We should try to get just one from each country…

Before voting, we would put all those objects in a box that would be “the international souvenir kit” that would be given to the poster everybody voted for…. It would be a beautiful way to give recognition to the poster we love the most, and for “this winner”, to remember all those countries that participated… (he or she, doesn’t have to travel to get to know all those countries)….”

I would like to hear your opinions, or other ideas about the student poster session… I would be more than honored to help organizing it. I think it would be better if two students were the organizers, and those two of course wouldn’t be allowed either to vote, or win. They would only present their poster as everybody.

Well, I wait for your ideas and expect to meet everybody soon…

No Free Lunch

I just received the degree of Doctor of Medicine and these days a new physician has many things to be bothered about –an eroding public image of the doctor, the crisis of health worker migration, and the lack of access of many Filipinos to health care. But while these issues have been often talked about, I would like to raise another that, because it is ingrained in our health care subculture, is often tolerated.

I am bothered by the fact that our class graduation party was largely paid by a drug company. They footed the bill of 150,000 pesos for dinner. Just to be clear about it. It was a party. It was not a scientific meeting. It was not a course of continuing medical education. People went there to eat, drink and be merry.

I am bothered that our class allowed it. It is patently a marketing scheme from the drug company and our class fell for it. Many feel that they are above the issue thinking that they can personally resist being swayed by all these marketing schemes. I think that is being quite naïve. Drug companies utilize these schemes because they work. Clear evidence has shown that physicians’ behaviour in prescribing medication is affected by these enticing efforts of drug companies.

And even if a doctor really can resist being swayed by these marketing schemes, where is the marketing money of drug companies coming from? Do you really think that it is out of the goodness of their heart? Or their fondness of physicians? Marketing costs are passed on to the consumers and thus are shouldered by patients. Costs from maintaining an army of cute and dapper medical representatives, and costs from cups of coffee, rounds of golf, lunches, tours, and various freebies that physicians accept contribute to the high prices of medications in the country. All these enjoyable freebies come from the pockets of patients, many of them poor and could hardly afford the complete course of medications their doctors prescribe.

Drug prices in the country are as much as it is in Western Europe, the U.S. and Canada. Our country, having no real pharmaceutical industry of its own, is one of the favourite playgrounds of the three big pharmaceutical firms. They are now challenging even the band-aid effort of our government to make essential drugs accessible to poor Filipinos though parallel drug importation. Expensive marketing schemes compound the problem of unjust drug pricing.

Will making a stand now against an unethical practice really change the situation? Our small daily choices may seem minute to make a dent on what is a much-ingrained practice. But how do we expect the situation to change? Who will make that stand if not us? Our collective stand will matter and will make that change.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Or a free graduation party.

Global Health through Education, Training and Service (GHETS) is sponsoring a contest to design the front of our 2007 holiday greeting card. Any individual health professions student from any institution worldwide may submit either their own original artwork, or artwork created by children or youth from their communities. The individual student whose entry is selected by the judging panel will be awarded free student registration for The Network: TUFH conference in Belgium in September 2006. The winning design and information about the artist will appear on GHETS' 2007 New Year's greeting card, which will be sent to nearly 200 partners and donors worldwide. Packages of greeting cards will also be sold to raise money for GHETS and our international partners, so your artwork could be seen by hundreds of people!

All entries must be received by Friday June 16, 2006.

Drawings, paintings or other similar artwork in any medium (pen, pencil, paints, etc.) are acceptable. Entries should reflect general themes related to global community health, but should not include the name GHETS or holiday greetings (which will appear inside the card). The final size of the greeting card will be no larger than 13 cm x 20 cm, so your design should fit into this space, either horizontally or vertically. All entries should be original work, either of the student making the submission, or of another young person who has agreed to let you submit the artwork on his or her behalf. First I want to say you that I have the opportunity to attend the national congress for education and investigation in psychology and the congress of the Latin American federation of associations in psychology. These congresses will be in the month of May 2006

I have begun to investigate the possibility of looking spaces in these congresses to share information about The Network: TUFH and SNO with the student participants and in that form to motivate them to make Local SNO’s in Latin-America.

Proposal of student exchange and elective program (SEP)

INTRODUCTION:

The Gezira student Network organization (SNO) has being an active member of the Network organization .One of the major target of Gezira SNO is the student exchange program. The SEP aims to give student the experience of studying in another school in abroad and being part of another culture.

The SEP would enable student to develop an alternative perspective on health care and education from their own country.

In addition the elective in other countries may contribute to better mutual understanding and exchange of ideas, values and knowledge

BACK GROUND:

THE MEDICAL SCHOOL:

Gezira medical school started at 1975 and take the problems base learning and community orientation as strategic of learning from start. Students have 10 semesters before graduate with integration between basic and clinical science

THE COMMUITY:

Wadmadani town, where the university of Gezira located, being a center of many villages in the heart of the beiges agriculture scheme in the world. The commonest illnesses are malaria portal hypertension, tuberculosis and rheumatic heart disease. The population in the area about 120000

OBJECTIVES OF SEP ARE TO:

1- Activation of the elective through student body
2- Experience problems based learning and working in small tutorial groups.
3- Pass information and exchange ideas about the future of SNO.
4- Get acquainted with the major health problem in different communities.
5- Offer SNO student some experience in primary health care (PHC).
6- Facilitate SNO student's participation in network tufh activities.
7- Experience SNO student's social live.

MODE OF ACTIVITIES:

1- Clinical courses in clouding problems based learning .
2- Community medicine courses.
3- Basic science and skill courses.
4- Activities organized by local SNO projects, seminars, workshops, convoies and research.

COORDINATION:

The SEP will be coordinating by Education development center and the local SNO exchange office under chair of the Dean of the faculty and the Network.

PERIOD OF EXCHANGE:

Will be organized according to the SNO student curriculum. With alternative variation e.g. (2 week, 4 week, 8 week, 16 week).

ESTIMATION COST:

The estimation cost for one Sudanese student is:
Travel (two ways) 1000$
Accommodation for one week 200$
Transport and meals for one week 150$

Gezira University can provide tickets for its student and accommodation and sundries for the student from collaborative school on the SEP.

CONCLUSION:

This program is intended o form that vital link between different countries, that the network is formed to maintain.

The Food at the Conference

Hello Everyone!

I hope that life is going well, wherever you may be!

In response to Jelle's post, much thanks for arranging a meeting room for the SNO EC; this will definitely give us an opportunity to re-cap the past year's SWOT (i.e. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, & Threats). Furthermore, it will allow the SNO EC to prepare for the SNO General Meetings that will be held throughout the conference.

On another note, I wanted to inquire about the food that will be provided at the conference. As a Muslim person, I only eat "Halal Food" according to my religious teachings and laws. Some of you may know that Jews eat "Kosher Food", which means "fit" and "proper". The term is usually used for food that Jews are permitted to eat under dietary laws that are derived from passages of their scriptures. Likewise, in Islam Muslims also have dietary requirements.

As a result, it would very much appreciated if the conference organizers can endeavour to provide "Halal and/or Kosher Foods". I'm sure there must be a resonable Muslim and Jewish community in Ghent and/or Belgium that you can inquire from that will provide such food products for the conference event.

Other than that, continue with the great work Jelle!!!

I justed wanted to let you know that at the conference of The Network in Ghent, you've got the possibility to meet each other the day before the conference starts, in parallel with the EC of The Network. We booked a room at Het Pand (the conference venue) for Friday, September 8, 2006. This way, if you want, you can meet each other to evaluate the past year, prepare the SNO-meetings of this year's conference or do whatever you want.

Pre-Conference

"PRACTICAL SKILLS FOR STUDENTS AND YOUNG HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO SETUP COMMUNITY PROJECTS"

There are, especially in the industrialised countries, still health professional curricula, that are too much institution- and hospital-bound, leaving very few opportunities for students to go out into their communities and do worthwhile projects. In fact, these programmes attribute very little time for such focus. Often students and young health professionals have ambitions for setting up projects in their communities but lack the tools, skills, and even the support from their institution. But there are certainly a lot of breakthrough examples around the world that show students developing significant community partnerships and projects. The workshop will provide examples as well as basic tools in engaging communities (e.g. communication and management skills, project planning, advocacy, promotion, negotiation and fundraising). The workshop will be oriented towards students and young health professionals as well as other participants to have discussions, develop skills and creativity, and to share experiences.

Student-friendly parallel sessions

For the last two conference topics, we'd like to ask everyone just to look at his own situation. We don't expect exciting results from glamorous research-projects, but just want to learn something from each other's experiences at home. We're looking for motivated students, teachers or anyone else, who would like to present a poster about their own experiences and projects. Both enthusiastic as well as critical posters are welcomed warmly.

Humanities in health professions curricula

Medical Humanities as a way of imparting empathy and social accountability to medical students through cultural activities is not longer a new concept. However, it is still the subject of a important discussion between advocates and opponents. More and more medical training programs try to include some form of humanities, all of them in their own way, with their own accents. Therefore we'd like to address the following questions: Why did your school choose to include a humanities program and how is it organised? How were opponents convinced of the sense of this program and do you really think it gives a surplus value to medical training?

Clinical and social relevance of teaching basic sciences: utopia or opportunity?

Medical schools increasingly try to create 'continuous medical curricula'. This means that practical skills, clinical reasoning and social commitment is teached yet from the first day after entering medical school. However, the first years of medical training often also should be used to teach a lot of basic sciences and everything about the 'normal human being'. How do these two 'opponents' manage to coexist in the same time-frame, how can they integrate each other's objectives in their own subjects and do students really experience the benefits of this evolution?

Dear students,

As you may probably know, The Network: TUFH publishes its biannual Newsletter. This Newsletter is being edited, designed, printed and mailed in the Netherlands. The printing is of a very good quality, but we can imagine that it is possible to get the same high standing quality for a lower price elsewhere. Therefore we would like to explore the possibility of printing the Newsletter in a developing country, like Mexico, Vietnam, India and the Philippines.

This is where we are seeking your collaboration: we would like to ask the students who are living in one of the countries mentioned above, to find out for us what the costs are of printing a Newsletter containing 28 pages, 32 pages and 40 pages (circulation of 4000) at your local printing office. You best take one of our Newsletters with you, so that the printer can get a good idea of what we want (for example what kind of paper we like to use).

We hope to get a lot of reactions from you; we are really counting on you. Our final aim is to find a local printing office with which we can do business; the student who helped us in bringing this about (by finding the office for us and being our intermediator), will be ‘rewarded’ with a fee waiver for the Network: TUFH Conference in 2006 (Belgium) or 2007 (Uganda)!

I first of all would like to wish you peace and happiness in this time of the year.
I'm so glad to see that this SNO-blog is working, I hope it will keep on working in the future...

As all of you probably might know, we'd like to make next year's conference in Ghent even more student-friendly than the previous ones.
Next to the social activities and the huge student participation we expect ;-), we are organising a student-centered pre-conference and would like to include some student-friendly themes for the parallel sessions.

As it is not possible for me to attach documents to this blog, I will post two comments on my own message: one comment with the introduction we wrote for the pre-conference and another comment with the proposals for 'student-friendly themes'.

I'm looking forward to hear your opinions and suggestions and all the other ideas you might have for this conference! And of course, you can start thinking about your participation in the wonderful conference we're organising in Ghent, 9-14 september 2006!

Hello everyone!

I'm sending this blog via my dorm room on a beautiful & sunny afternoon from the heart of the Pearl of Africa; Kampala, Uganda.

Its great to read/see so much activity on this blog!

I must admit, that this is my first time seeing the blog since i left Vietnam. Once i arrived back to school the tidal wave of exams caught me by the throat. Fortunately, i am through with the theory parts of the exam and moving on to the practicals; which i perfer so much :-)

As I was reading through the various posts, i noticed Yoka's post regarding pre-conference workshops. Luckily, Khalifa, Carole, Eman, Catherine, and myself (who attended the Atlanta 2004 Conference) brainstromed several workshop ideas after the conference. Below you will find the "Cut & Paste" copy of the several workshop ideas we felt that could be of use to students attending future The Network:TUFH conference. Hopefully, at least one of them will be implemented in Belgium.

I will try my best to find a suitable facilator here who would be willing to run such a student based workshop.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP IDEAS - TARGETTING STUDENTS

A problem based learning approach will be taken to provide students with active learning environment. They will work in small groups applying skills through role plays, case studies and their own work, maximizing the interactive learning and the opportunity for inter-personal interaction.

5. Leadership and communication skills
Leadership in student organisations run on a shoestring by volunteers can be a formidable challenge. This part of the program focuses on team building and peer education skills and how to motivate people to work with you and for you

6. Effective Communication
Cultural contact of communication, body language, writing styles, using attention span most beneficially, spatial relationship, overcoming our fears with interpersonal interaction and diplomatic management

7. Negotiation
How to prepare for negotiations. How to prevent stuck in an impasse or conflict. How to uncover hidden agendas and how to get the most out of the situation. Understanding and using body language, positive engagement and discovering partnership not sponsorship

8. Conflict Prevention
Why and how do conflicts arise? How can they be prevented? Once a conflict has arisen, how do you get the parties together? Small group discussion and dynamics in managerial or co-ordinating level meetings.

9. Facilitation and chairing
More than anything, meetings are the cement of organisations. However effective and constructive meetings demand considerable skills. Basic facilitation, an understanding of the roles in the meeting (the interactive method), writing agendas, writing minutes and the group memory but to identify some of the program.

10. Project planning
Addresses all the necessary steps in project planning and management from the conduction of a baseline survey and needs assessment to evaluation. Outlines the basic rules for effective project implementation and equips the participants with useful tools and models for application.

11. Management skills
Addresses the hard core management issues: Strategic planning, Goal setting, Financial management, Needs Assessment, Evaluation and quality control.

12. Advocacy, Health Promotion And Development
Although a new topic to the training, we have launched professionally taught sessions in understanding and applying skills in lobbying, campaigning, and using the media, community outreach, research and action

13. Fundraising
Knowing how to get support and funding of your projects is imperative, as money is needed for most ideas to be implemented. Basic fundraising skills that are taught in an interactive way and success stories shared between participants to help them realise their potential.

14. Training of trainers
The creation of the IFMSA training pool who will ensure continuity and sustainability of the federations training. It also maximises the impact of the training and reaches a much larger audience than just the international meetings. This training will be provided by external professionals combined with the experience of internal trainers aware the examples in medical student work.

15. Personal development
All the sessions of the Leadership training program contribute to the personal development of the participants. Specific topics that focus more on the individual than his external reality include: Presentation skills, Public Speaking and Writing Skills.

16. Information Technology use and management
The increasing use and application of technology into our education and health profession has inspired us to teach aspects of utilising basic IT to assist organising activities, using the world wide web and professionalising our work.

17.Program assessment / competitive analysis
The key to developing work based on experience is to evaluate and assess, before, during and after the project. Methods of designing a programme assessment as well as comparing and applying options are key to successful choices for executing activities

18. Strategic Planning, thinking and management
The fundamental aspects of planning a project must begin with defining missions, visions, goals and objectives. Further to this, group, activity and task management are outlined through abstract and real examples.

19. Peer Education and Cascade Teaching
To promote established methods for teaching others as well as communicating awareness of important health issues with the aim of combating their causes on a local level (e.g. HIV/AIDS, Smoking)

Pre-conference workshop suggestion for students at the 2006 conference

Dear Students,

I hope that you enjoyed the Network: TUFH Vietnam conference and that you had the chance to settle in. At the Network: TUFH office we already started with the preparations for our 2006 conference in Ghent, Belgium.

As you may know every year we try to facilitate a pre-conference workshop especially for students and young health professionals. For the Ghent conference we would like to propose a pre-conference workshop on the following theme: How can I, as a student, be of importance for the community?

Could you please let me have your comments on this proposal and perhaps you have a suggestion for a staff member who could facilitate this pre-conference workshop?
If you have another suggestion for a theme, please let me know!

Hello from New Mexico! Great to see the activity and conversation going already on the SNO Blog....

I got a request from the folks at the Network: Can we add " The Network: TUFH" before or after the main title at the top? I know it's in the subtitle, but it would be good to have it in the large type as well...

Also, Pauline & Jolanda would like to be added as contributors so that they can create posts as well.

vietnam was such a great experience! it was a lot of fun and at the same time there's so much promise from the SNO. i really hope that we move things forward. i'm happy to have had the chance to meet you all. i can't beleive that it's been more than a week since we last saw each other. i have a couple of group pictures in my camera, will share it with you guys soon!

Hi guys! Wow, were all geniuses here! Having our own custom blog as we have discussed during one of the TUFH workshops was indeed useful and important. Right Stinj from Beligium?! I could not find the right words to say having the chance to meet and get friends with all of you in Vietnam. As my first international convention and catching my first ever international trip abroad, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for that matter was such a fun and memorable experience I will forever keep. The first time I though well get out of place during the convention because just like Ate Tonet and Kuya Raoul from the Philippines sadi: "We're two generations apart." But, it was the other way around, I guess. Evereyone was just very eager to share what they know and abundantly give what they have...Of course, how could you give somethin' you don't have right? Anyways...that's why the Student Network Organization (SNO) is unique. Because we try hard to bridge the gap, cross boundaries, become socially responsible for each of our friends in the Networks' future successes.

Having been elected as Official Philippine representative with the SNO is a great task I dare to pursue because I realized how lucky I am to be part of our precious group. All of you have marked a great imprint in my source book.

VIETNAM ROSE: This is one famous television series back home. But in my stay in Vietnam and reserched through the different flower shops there, I found out that there are no really Vietnam Roses. Maybe and I believe, that I just found, treasured and fragrant ROSES IN VIETNAM...Those were all of yah guys!!! THANKS SO MUCH! Cum on rat niew! Salamat Po!

By the way, my Languge paper is safely treasured with me. I'll let it be posted ASAP! ^._.^

I'm so glad that some of you had had a fabulous time in Sai Gon- cause i'm the landlord, i am! I was very moved (quite wetty, huh?) when i saw you all enjoyed the Bamboo Dancing (i was so afraid that anyone was hurt). Augustine and I got back home last night after a long 27hours of travel. I'm happy to be home but am already missing all of my new friends from across the globe. I had an incredible time at at the conference in Vietnam and was inspired by the dedication that all of you have to your improving the health of your communities. Mabuhay! I am back in the familiar surroundings of MY MANILA. .. I hope everyone is safe and well.
