Pre-conference workshop suggestion for students at the 2006 conference

Dear Students,

I hope that you enjoyed the Network: TUFH Vietnam conference and that you had the chance to settle in. At the Network: TUFH office we already started with the preparations for our 2006 conference in Ghent, Belgium.

As you may know every year we try to facilitate a pre-conference workshop especially for students and young health professionals. For the Ghent conference we would like to propose a pre-conference workshop on the following theme: How can I, as a student, be of importance for the community?

Could you please let me have your comments on this proposal and perhaps you have a suggestion for a staff member who could facilitate this pre-conference workshop?
If you have another suggestion for a theme, please let me know!

Looking forward to seeing your comments.

Best wishes,

Yoka Cerfontaine
Secretary
The Network: TUFH

Yoka,

I certainly enjoyed the conference in Vietnam and found it quite student-friendly.

Regarding the proposed pre-conference workshop... I think that this is an area of interest for many medical and health professional students. It is usually the case that they have gone to med school brimming with enthusiasm and energy to be of help to their communities. It is regrettable though that quite many MD programs are institution-bound, even hospital-bound, leaving very few oppurtunities for the students to go out into the communities and do worthwthile projects with the community. BUT there are certainly a lot of breakthrough examples around the world that show students developing deep community-orientation as well as having significant community partnerships. THE WORKSHOP can perhaps provide examples as well as basic tools in engaging communities.

I think David Bor will be a good facilitator for a pre-conference workshop on: How can I, as a student, be of importance for the community? He can perhaps share lessons-learned in his long experience in community-partnerhips (e.g. Cambridge Health Alliance).

warm regards,

Dear everyone,
I am extremely interested in the pre-conference workshop on developing community projects. I have got two training courses of project planning and management. And as a result, two project proposals have been made (one is for HIV people's clubs, one is for a children village of my city). Both were submitted for sponsorships from MCNV(Medical Committee Neitherlands Vietnam) and World Bank. But nothing has happened. And I wonder. I wonder how, I wonder why...
